…. there was only one way to God?
It’s a commonly expressed view: “Many roads lead to God”. After all, there are many religions in the world and all of them must lead ultimately to the same God. Yet this thinking is flawed, because if you examine the various claims of different religions, you discover that each of them make exclusive claims to their particular god. One of the five pillars of Islam is: “there is only one God, Allah and Muhammed is his prophet.” Hindus also believe in a supreme Creator God of whom all creation is a part. Judaism maintains there is no God but JHWH (His name is too sacred to be spoken). Christianity believes in a God who is personal and exists in three different personalities. Can all these religions be right? Do they all point to the same God? When Jesus lived on earth he made a most surprising claim: “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” This is a totally self-exclusive claim – either it is true or it is false. If false, then we can dismiss his entire teachings as the ravings of a lunatic, but if true, then all the other ways to God prove to be a dead end. Jesus claimed to be God on multiple occasions, on one of which his opponents threatened to stone him for blasphemy, saying: “We are not stoning you for any of these (miracles), but for blasphemy because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”
