…we could be sure we weren’t being lied to?
Cynicism has become part of our present day culture. We no longer believe a politician’s promises, and even when we buy a product we’ve seen advertised on television or the internet we don’t expect it to live up to the advertiser’s description. Nowadays it’s quite often to have a conversation going like this: “Well, that maybe true for you, but it’s not true for me!” Truth has become whatever you make it. One man’s truth is as good as another. We’ve come to believe that truth is an idea, or a subjective concept. The surprising thing to dicover is that Truth is far more than an abstract idea or even an objective reality. Truth is a Person. Standing before the one who would ultimately pass the death sentence on him, Jesus said: “The reason I have come into the world is to bear witness to the truth” Earlier he had claimed: “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.” He claimed to be the embodiment of ultimate truth. To believe his claim is the unique way to a relationship with a God who loved humanity so much that he was prepared to allow his only Son to bear the consequences of our rejection of his rule in our lives. Unlike any other world religion, Christ’s way was not the slavish obedience to a set of rules or principles, but an invitation to the possibility of a genuine personal relationship with the Creator of the Universe. How do we know all this? Because he left us a record of his words and actions in the pages of a book that no-one has been able to totally destroy down the ages.
